Many statisticians today feel that our subject is not widely
recognized as an essential part of the scientific process. A
variety of recent events, from the Challenger space shuttle disaster
to the current misperceptions regarding the use of sampling methods
in the year 2000 census, highlight the need for statisticians to
play an active role in making others aware of what we can
contribute. I will discuss in this talk how a great opportunity to
gain recognition can come from having a presence on the World Wide
Web. Currently, although there are many web sites produced by
statisticians and departments of Statistics, many of these sites do
not realize their full potential as resources for non-statisticians.
I will display a series of web sites to illustrate various
features of Statistics websites. I will then discuss the new
website for the Statistical Consulting Center in the Division of
Statistics (http://www.uidaho.edu/stat/scc), which is intended to be
a resource on statistical concepts and methods for researchers.
