Dr. Pat Heglund of the Biology Department at the University
of Idaho collected data on species occurrence and habitat
usage for 50 species of land birds over a two-year period in
94 forest stands in northern Idaho. These data are to be used
for generating hypothetical groups of bird species, where
each group (guild-block) has similar habitat utilization
patterns. Two different methods were used to generate
candidate guild-blocks: one method based on cluster analysis
of habitat variable means associated with each species, and
a second method based on cluster analysis of coefficient
vectors from logistic regression models developed for each
species. The resulting clusters will be presented and
discussed. Plans will be outlined for validating the
candidate guild-block groups using data collected in
subsequent years from a larger sample of forest stands
in northern Idaho.
