Course Overview

Accounting is a highly interdisciplinary subject that touches almost all facets of our lives. All of us make many financial decisions every day without giving it a second thought. Imagine what you could accomplish with a basic understanding of accounting. Accounting is often referred to as the language of business and whether we work in a laboratory or an office we all make business decisions with regards to our day to day occupation. Without a basic understanding of this language, the objectives and goals of our efforts may be difficult to achieve or achieved with less financial efficiency. On a personal level, individuals with a basic knowledge of accounting with have a leg up on those without that understanding in basic business transactions such as making a car loan, buying a house or setting up your last will and testament. Not to mention giving a person a better understanding of their 401k plan. On a professional level, whether an individual is an engineer or a member of the human resource department, understanding the basics of accounting will provide a person with a base from which they can plan more effectively thus better achieving their unit’s goals. This course combines the basic principles of Financial Accounting. Financial Accounting is the process of measuring and communicating financial information for use by interested internal and external parties or stakeholders such as stockholders, creditors, corporate management, employees, vendors, suppliers and other interested groups. In this class, students will gain a basic understanding of financial accounting by learning the mechanics of double entry bookkeeping, and how different accounts are classified according to the basic accounting equation.
