One of the many current nutritional fads is taking omega-3 and omega-6 supplements. Typically, these supplements are fish oils, as these fatty acids are abundant in deep sea fish. While it is known that these classes of fatty acids play an important part in brain function and immune response, there is little literature on what normal or healthy levels of these are in blood. This is particularly true in children, as there are no published reference ranges for these fatty acids. The methods we are using to define these ranges include a mix of parametric and non-parametric (bootstrap) methods. In this seminar, I will talk about how we implemented these two approaches, and will focus on the particular challenges of working with truncated data and facilitating proper use of the ranges by clinicians. |
