The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has one of the most comprehensive databases available for accidents and injuries that occur on the job. This database is a rich source of information for the circumstances surrounding accident or injury events. However, many challenges exist when trying to identify risk factors for injury. While MSHA collects detailed information on the injured, they collect very little on the total population of miners. Because we don’t have the same level of detail on the non-injured, this makes using typical logistic or Poisson regression inappropriate to estimate odds of injury. I will discuss the models that have been used to model injury rates on this data set, including the multinomial logistic model we used. I will also discuss parallel efforts that will make this surveillance data base more effective as a safety management tool from which risk factors can be identified.
