Statisticians have long felt that our contributions are not well understood and that we need to do a better job of
recruiting students into our profession. Recent examples of these concerns include an inflammatory article published in
Science News and the debate over having high school students take AP Statistics courses. After reviewing and discussing
these two examples, we will consider approaches to address these concerns. One strategy is to demonstrate the value of
statistics by making resources more readily available to students and researchers. An ideal way to accomplish this goal is
via well-constructed websites. I will give results from three aspects of an on-going study that we are conducting on websites
with statistical content. The first part of the study investigates what academic Statistics units are currently doing with
their websites. The second part suggests a framework for providing content on academic Statistics websites. The third part
summarizes early results from a survey that we are conducting of clients regarding content that they feel would be helpful.
We will then propose a way to distinguish our planned Bi-State Department of Statistical Science by working together to
create a distinctive website with helpful resources for researchers. We will conclude by showing a set of interesting
Statistics-related websites.
