Aphid monitoring in southeast Idaho
As
part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for Idaho, the
University of Idaho and U of I Extension - with additional funding
provided by the Idaho Potato Commission and coordination with the Idaho
Crop Improvement Association - has augmented a small aphid monitoring
program with yellow bucket water traps to identify when aphid flights are
occurring. Knowing when such flights occur can help seed potato growers
determine when to initiate protective measures to minimize in-season
movement of Potato virus Y, a potato-infecting virus that is moved
from infected plants to healthy ones by a number of aphid species. This
virus has strict tolerances in the seed potato re-certification program.
Monitoring for aphid flights can also aid in decisions regarding timing
of potato vine-kill.
If you are a grower, agronomist, or
other ag professional who wants to participate in our aphid monitoring
program, we can provide you with some of the essential tools, and we can
also provide the service of counting the number of alate (winged) aphids
trapped on a weekly basis. Currently, we do not charge for this service,
since the data is made public (specific locations of the traps are kept
confidential).
Here is an informative video that
explains how we trap aphids:
