Pedestrian and residential shopping street.

In the image above, a historic street is a desirable residential and commercial location.  Discuss the characteristics of this location that make it a desirable place to live.

Mixed use districts, where private and public sectors must cooperate in order to effectively function; are actually what make urban areas thrive.  Why?

Plan

In this plan view, you can see that the street is much too wide to encourage pedestrian traffic across the street.  What effects does this have on traffic flow and commerce along this street.

What would you do to make the above street plan more supportive of commerce?

Open space

Public Plazas, Green Space and Recreational Space share many common characteristics.  However, they can be distinguished  by several elements of their location and intended use.  Compare and contrast elements that distinguish these three types of open space.

Being able to walk to a near by park (as opposed to driving  or taking a bus) is much more convenient.  Further, this increases the sense of ownership among neighborhoods.  Describe at least three ways of supporting connectivity and ownership using park designs.

A network of linear parks connecting various sizes of open space is a ideal that is not possible in most existing American cities.  Why?

If you were designing an urban open space that could support both commercial, social and recreational uses at various, different times - what type of open space would you choose to design.

If you were designing an open space specifically for residents of a given area - what type of open space would you design?

Culture & History

What is "culture"?

What impact does the culture of a region have on design of public space for that region.

What is "history"?

What impact does the history of a region have on design of public space for that region.

Increases in urban population, population density, industrial technology and commercial opportunity can stress the infrastructure of historic districts, and can threaten their existence.  What contributions do historic architectural, city and landscape elements make to quality of urban life that can justify their preservation?
