• Energy

Energy enables the luxury of the modern lifesttyle. In the Unites States, on average each person uses about 13 hp of primary power, day in and day out. We can move towards energy sustainability by indcreasing the supply while decreading the demand. I work on both supply and demand sides of energy.

My research in alternative liquid fuel that can be used in transportation such as Biodiesel increases the supply of liquid transportation fuel, the hardest to replace. In fact, our research lab maintains the authoritative, unbiased, and the most comprehensive Biodiesel Education website in the world. The website is designed to educate the general public, producers, distributors, users, and policymakers about biodiesel. The effort is supported by funding from the USDA's Biodiesel Education Program.

On the demand side, we help industries ranging from the food processing plant to advanced aircraft manufacturers to become more energy efficient. The Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Idaho provides a free energy audit to the medium-sized manufacturer, at no charge to the participating industry. The effort is supported by the Department of Energy. We have provided energy auditing service to over seventy industries, mainly located in the inland northwest but as far as Alaska and helped them save about three million dollars of energy each year.
