Study Questions for Commerce, Open Space and Culture & History
Culture: the ideas, customs, skills, arts, etc. of a people or group that are transferred, communicated, or passed along to succeeding generations.
Local and regional history are the primary sources of city culture. Traditions and values of the region influence the cultural offering of a particular city. A regional architectural style can powerfully evoke a unique sense of place. |
A dominate or state sponsored religion might result in magnificent architecture such as the twin churches that frame the entrance to Piazza San Carlo (see image right). The second image at right shows a beautiful architectural arcade that was mandated by the duke and designed by the royal architect. It establishes a unique aesthetic and environmental element.
More temporal but very important to the quality of life is the cultural programming by the municipality or private sector. Examples include art music and dance expositions. Of course, high quality museums are part of a great city's cultural contribution but so is the public art that the citizen's contact daily.
Patriotic celebrations are another example of civic culture that enrich the resident and visitor.
Preservation of buildings and landscapes that reference the historic heritage of a people and add satisfaction to those dwelling in the city. The image of the sculptural group at the Giardino Reale (King's Gardem) tell a story about the history of the city as well as accomplishing a wonderful artistic goal. |
